Unemployment Insurance Management
Michigan Unemployment Insurance is charged to employers on the first $9,000 of each employee’s wages. It starts anew each January.
The rate charged by the Michigan Unemployment Agency depends on the ratio of the contributions made and benefits paid. Since the average annual premium paid on an employee is approximately $540.00 and the maximum benefit an employee can receive is just over $9,000, its not surprising that many companies see their rate increase after just one or two claims.
The only time an employer should pay unemployment benefits is to workers that have been laid off due to lack of work.
The unfortunate reality is that employers pay nemployment benefits to almost every employee they discharge. The rules are always evolving so what worked three years ago will no longer win at an unemployment hearing.
You can’t rely on the “employment-at-will” myth.
Avoid unnecessary unemployment expenses by using the MidWest Progressive Discipline Process. It is a method accepted by the various state and federal agencies designed to protect the rights of employees.
The process holds management accountable for providing information and training and the employee accountable for performing the tasks as defined.
